Transvaginal mesh failure:  From Hope to Helplessness

So often in our society’s medical history, products and procedures have come along that at first, seemed to offer hope and relief to patients.  Unfortunately, those hopes are all too often destroyed when those products and procedures were not tested properly, or perhaps were rushed to market with profit standing first in line ahead of patient’s well-being and health.  Transvaginal Mesh products are a prime example of this.

About 20 years ago, transvaginal mesh systems entered the market.  They were seen as the solution to the pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence problems that plague millions of women.  This so-called solution became an even bigger problem to these already suffering patients.  Problems with these transvaginal mesh systems came to light in the early 1990’s.  Patients of transvaginal mesh systems and bladder slings became to suffer serious and permanent complications.  While the symptoms of these complications vary, the following are some examples:

  • Mesh Erosion
  • Urine Leakage
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Vaginal Infections
  • Vaginal Bleeding
  • Bladder Obstruction
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Constipation

The FDA discovered that these devices were causing a foreign-body reaction in the pelvic region.  Mesh shrinkage, hardening and contraction led to terrible, often irreversible tissue and nerve damage.  This mesh literally became imbedded in pelvic tissue, necessitating multiple post-implant surgeries.

The FDA’s investigation into the effects of transvaginal mesh and bladder sling complications is ongoing.  Thousands of cases have been filed across the country.  These products simply did not live up to the promises made by their producers.
